History Day Winners 2007

Local Students Win in 2007 History Day Competition

Monterey County History Day 2007 was held March 10th and 11th at Los Arboles Middle School in Marina. Three hundred local students participated in this year’s competition, creating projects based on the theme “Triumph and Tragedy in History.” Currently in its 17th year, Monterey County History Day is coordinated by the Lyceum of Monterey County and the Monterey County Office of Education, and supported by AT&T Pebble Beach Charities, the funding arm of Monterey Peninsula Foundation.

During the competition, over 40 judges viewed approximately 300 entries and interviewed students about their research. Judges, who are local professionals, selected two winners in each category to represent Monterey County at the state competition in Long Beach from April 26th-29th 2007. In addition, judges selected over 80 recipients of special awards sponsored by 18 individuals, organizations and businesses.

History Day is a six-month to yearlong education program that engages students in the process of discovery and interpretation of historical topics. Students produced dramatic performances, imaginative exhibits, multi-media documentaries, research papers and websites based on their research related to the annual theme.

Founded in 1960, the Lyceum is a 501c3 non-profit organization that coordinates educational enrichment programs and activities including Mock Trial, Spelling Bee for 4th/5th grades, History Day, and over 400 programs annually and reaching over 11,000 students each year within Monterey County.
